Asthma team

The scientific community recognizes the need to develop methods to evaluate bronchial remodelling using techniques that are less invasive than bronchoscopy. It is in this context and in order to address this problem that the Asthma team has been created. This team includes researchers from the Université de Montréal, McGill University, Université Laval and Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.

Its mission is to unite the expertise of every researcher involved in order to increase knowledge on asthma, which is at the center of a number of different respiratory pathologies. The team benefits from the data obtained by its experts in their previous respective projects and aims to use the samples available in the Respiratory Health Network Tissue Bank. The team intends firstly and foremost to develop new tools that could allow the assessment of the clinical severity of asthma by measuring remodelling biomarkers.

Dr. Catherine Laprise

Dr. Catherine Laprise is responsible for the Asthma research axis.

Catherine Laprise is a full professor of genetics at the fundamental cciences department of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. She holds the Canadian Research Chair in Environment and Genetics of respiratory and allergy since January 2015 (Level 1 Chair).
She devotes her research to the identification of genes associated with asthma and a better understanding of the role or the impact of these genes in the development and symptoms of this disease. Those research on asthma aims to support the integration of data called "omics" (genetic, genomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic) to better understand the pathogenesis of asthma.
Her lab manages one of the largest family DNA collections characterized for asthma and her team is working to document the genes of susceptibility and protections for asthma and conditions related to asthma, paying a special attention to gene-gene interactions and gene-environment. Her research also focuses on the study of the transcriptome of this disease using cell models and bronchial tissues.
